Mo Salah set a black record in defeat to Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final

Mohamed Salah's exceptional form this season did not continue today (Sunday) when Liverpool were defeated in the Carabao Cup final by Newcastle United with a score of 2-1.

Salah is enjoying his most productive season at Anfield, having scored 32 goals and made 22 assists in all competitions.

His form has led to calls for the Egyptian to win the Ballon d'Or and be officially recognised as the best player in the world.

The 32-year-old had hoped to lead Liverpool to another trophy on Sunday at Wembley, but they were beaten by Newcastle who won their first trophy in 70 years.

With just 23 touches of the ball, Salah was surprisingly among the Liverpool forwards who posed very few threats to Nick Pope's goal.

According to Opta, this was actually the first time for Salah as a Liverpool player that he neither scored nor created a goal-scoring chance in a match where he played the full 90 minutes.

Liverpool were aiming to win the treble last week, but Arne Slot's team were eliminated from the Champions League after defeat to PSG.

The Reds are, of course, on course to win the Premier League as they currently have a 12-point lead over second-placed Arsenal.Telegraph/
