Mexico threatens to sue Google over naming of Gulf of Mexico

Mexico is preparing a possible lawsuit against Google for changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico.

Google changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of Mexico for Maps users in the United States last week.

Users in Mexico still see the name Gulf of Mexico, while everyone outside these two countries see both names, the Telegraph reports.

Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum noted on Monday that the country will seek justice in court if Google does not revert these changes to their original state.

Google defended its decision to change the name by saying that it was simply following a long-standing policy of changing maps, without any political affiliation, and that this applies to all regions.

Donald Trump, upon taking office, ordered the renaming. The United States Geographic Names Information System officially updated the bay's name last week. /Telegraph/
