Mexico has imposed steep new tariffs on imports from countries without trade agreements, including China.

Last month, the country was the largest market for Chinese electric cars with 19,344 units imported, an increase of 2,367% compared to the previous year.

The tariffs will be up to 50% on Chinese products and will affect 1,463 items, including cars, auto parts, steel and textiles.

The Mexican government says the measure aims to protect about 350,000 jobs and reduce dependence on imports.

China has reacted strongly, calling the tariffs harmful and protectionist. It is not yet known whether Beijing will take retaliatory measures. /Telegraph/
