Mexican Navy ship hits Brooklyn Bridge in New York, at least two dead and several others injured

A Mexican navy ship has crashed into New York's Brooklyn Bridge, killing two crew members and injuring 17 others.

The Mexican Navy said the Cuauhtemoc, an academy training ship with 277 people on board, was damaged in the collision, foreign media wrote, according to the Telegraph.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced that two people had died and 17 others were injured, including two who remained in critical condition.

Eyewitnesses told the Associated Press they saw two people being carried off the ship on stretchers.

No one is said to have fallen into the water.

It was not clear what caused the ship to veer off course.

New York Police Department Special Operations Chief Wilson Aramboles said the boat had just left a pier in Manhattan and was supposedly headed out to sea, not toward the bridge.

He added that an initial report suggested the ship had lost power due to a mechanical problem.

The bridge, which is a major waterway between Manhattan and Brooklyn, has since reopened without any major damage.

The Cuauhtemoc is about 90 meters long and 12 meters wide, according to the Mexican Navy.

She was built in Spain and first sailed in 1982.

The ship was scheduled to visit 22 ports in 15 countries, including Kingston in Jamaica, Havana in Cuba, Cozumel in Mexico and New York.

She also planned to sail to Reykjavik in Iceland, Bordeaux, Saint Malo and Dunkirk in France, Aberdeen in Scotland and other places for a total of 254 days, 170 of them at sea. /Telegraph/
