Mazda is seriously considering a powerful Wankel engine

Mazda is planning to bring back the Wankel rotary engine with two rotors, bringing this project closer to completion.

According to an interview with Road & Track magazine, Mazda CEO Masahiro Moro stated that the company has reopened the development group for rotary engines in order to meet strict emissions standards, such as LEV IV in the US and Euro 7 in Europe.

Moro pointed out that a single-rotor engine wouldn't be powerful enough for the American market, so Mazda is developing a dual-rotor configuration.

He acknowledged that rotary engines have had difficulty meeting emissions standards, which led to their production being discontinued in 2012. However, recent advances are encouraging.

In 2023, Mazda brought back the rotary engine as a generator to extend range in the MX-30 electric model.

Now, the dual-rotor system is expected to be used in a sports model, possibly based on the Iconic SP concept. /Telegraph/
