The UN General Assembly called on Tuesday for the immediate and unconditional return of Ukrainian children "forcibly transferred" to Russia, a sensitive issue in negotiations for a possible peace treaty between Kiev and Moscow, AFP and Reuters reported.

The non-binding resolution, adopted by 91 votes in favor (including North Macedonia), 12 against (including Russia) and 57 abstentions, calls on Moscow to "ensure the immediate, safe and unconditional return of all Ukrainian children who have been abducted."

Except for Macedonia, almost all European countries voted in favor, as did the United States. Among the countries that were against, besides Russia, were Belarus, China, and mainly countries from the African continent.

The document also calls on Moscow to "immediately cease all practices of forcible transfer, deportation, family separation and separation of children from their legal guardians, change of personal status, including citizenship, adoption or placement in foster families, as well as indoctrination of Ukrainian children."
