Newell's Old Boys vice-president Juan Manuel Medina has confirmed that the Argentine club is actively working on a return for Lionel Messi to his boyhood team in Rosario, with the aim of this happening in the first half of 2027.

Speaking of TN, Medina explained that it is a comprehensive project involving the club, city authorities, regional government and the Argentine Football Federation (AFA), with the aim of improving infrastructure and building a competitive sports structure that would enable Messi to perform at the highest level in all competitions.

This initiative reflects Messi's long-publicized desire to one day play for the club he has supported since childhood.

The 38-year-old striker, who turns 39 in June during the 2026 World Cup, continues to be in exceptional form at Inter Miami, where last season he scored 29 goals and provided 19 assists in 28 MLS matches, leading the Florida team to the championship title.

Messi has a contract with Inter Miami until 2028 and earns around 12 million euros per year, not including bonuses. He recently rejected a very lucrative offer from the Arab club Al-Ittihad.

Although Newell's Old Boys cannot financially rival such offers, a potential Messi return would be driven largely by feelings and emotion.

"We are working for Leo to play for Newell's in the first half of 2027," underlining that the club is actively building the necessary conditions to make this a reality.Telegrafi/
