Citroen has revealed the new generation of the C5 Aircross, which remains faithful to the design of the original concept, but also introduces new technological features – including the largest infotainment screen ever seen in a Stellantis vehicle.
Comfort and practicality have been improved over its predecessor, and the SUV is now available with all-electric, mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains.
The C5 Aircross adopts Citroen's new design language, which has been seen on the latest C3 model, as well as refreshed versions of the C4, C4 X and Berlingo, reports Telegraph.
The bodywork is more pronounced with a focus on aerodynamics for greater efficiency. The wheels are up to 20 inches in diameter, with a solid ground clearance of 200 mm.
Interestingly, the production version retains the prominent LED taillights from the concept, adding a touch of French eccentricity to the family SUV.
The main changes compared to the concept are the classic door handles and thicker roof pillars.
In terms of dimensions, the new C5 Aircross is 4,652 mm long and has a wheelbase of 2,784 mm – which is 150 mm, or 60 mm longer than before.
The real surprise is in the cabin, dubbed the “C-Zen Lounge.” A slim center console houses an infotainment screen, beneath which is a row of physical controls.
Although the screen's dimensions were not disclosed, the company claims it is "the largest HD central display ever offered in a Stellantis vehicle," with elements that are fixed and parts that can be adjusted.
This is an interesting move considering that Citroen positions itself as the most affordable brand within the group.
It also has 10-inch digital instruments, an elegant gear selector, wireless charging, a large screen on the front and plenty of space for storing small items.
The interior looks clean, modern and ready to make everyday driving more enjoyable, Citroen claims.
Designers used soft fabric to cover the dashboard, door frames, and seats.
The famous Citroen Advance Comfort seats are now even softer and offer greater body support.
The front seats have electric adjustment, heating, ventilation and massage options, while the rear seats have adjustable backrests and heating as an option.
However, unlike the previous generation, the rear bench is no longer divided into three independent seats and cannot move back and forth.
Thanks to the vehicle's larger dimensions, rear passengers have more leg and headroom.
The trunk has been increased to 651 liters in all versions, regardless of the type of steering system.
There is also an additional 75 liters of space under the trunk floor, as well as another 40 liters distributed throughout the cabin.
The new C5 Aircross uses Stellantis' STLA Medium mechanical platform, the same as the Peugeot 3008/5008, Opel Grandland and DS No8, and possibly even the upcoming DS No7.
This foundation allows for the introduction of fully electric powertrains – a first for this model – along with mild hybrids and plug-in hybrids.
All versions of the new C5 Aircross have an automatic transmission and front-wheel drive.
The electric e-C5 Aircross comes in two versions, both with a single engine (no all-wheel drive, unlike the Peugeot twins).
The Standard Range version has 210 horsepower and offers an autonomy of up to 520 kilometers (WLTP) with a battery capacity of 73 kWh.
The extended-range version offers 230 horsepower and has a range of up to 679 miles (97 kilometers) thanks to a larger 160 kWh battery. In both cases, the maximum charging power is XNUMX kW on DC chargers.
The base version of the C5 Aircross Hybrid 145 may be the most interesting for buyers. It is equipped with the familiar 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine with turbocharger and 136 horsepower, with an additional 12 horsepower from an electric motor integrated into a 6-speed automatic transmission. It receives energy from a small 0.9 kWh battery.
There is also the C5 Aircross Plug-in Hybrid 195, which uses a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and a single electric motor, for a total combined output of 195 horsepower.
Power is transmitted to the front wheels via a seven-speed automatic transmission. The 21 kWh battery allows for an autonomy of up to 85 km in electric mode.
Like its predecessor, the C5 Aircross uses Citroen's specific suspension with progressive hydraulic cushions, which promise a "magic carpet ride."
The Drive Assist 2.0 package also enables level 2 semi-autonomous driving.
Since the C5X coupe-crossover model will be withdrawn from production after this generation, the C5 Aircross will become the new flagship model in Citroen's range.
The new Citroen C5 Aircross will arrive in European showrooms in the second half of the year, and production will take place at the factory in Rennes, France. Prices will be announced closer to the vehicle's market launch date. /Telegraph/
