Lautaro Martinez's injury is much more serious than thought

Inter captain Lautaro Martinez has been withdrawn from the Argentina squad after tests showed his muscle injury was much more serious than initially thought.

The striker was expected to remain in the squad in the hope of recovering in time for Wednesday's 2026 World Cup qualifier against Brazil, even if he was forced to miss the first match against Uruguay.

However, it was announced this evening that Lautaro Martinez has been sent home to be reviewed by Inter doctors.

The statement claims that he has been diagnosed with a muscle lesion in the lower left thigh.

If confirmed, this would be much more serious than previously thought and would put the crucial Champions League quarter-final matches against Bayern Munich at risk.

He is the second Inter striker to be sent home from international matches due to injury, after Marcus Thuram already left the France camp ahead of the Nations League quarter-finals with an ankle sprain.Telegraph/
