Lamborghini surpasses Bentley

Lamborghini surpasses Bentley

It may not sound significant at first glance, but Bentley was always far ahead of Lamborghini during its time at the VW Group. That's no longer the case.

Volkswagen Group has announced its full sales results for 2024, which show a 2.3 percent decline in deliveries to 9.03 million vehicles.

However, an interesting shift in positions within the group of brands that the German car giant calls the “Progressive Brand Group” has drawn attention. This group includes Audi, Lamborghini and Bentley.

It was already known that Audi had a bad year, while Lamborghini posted record sales. Now the Bentley brand's results have been released - and they are not encouraging.

The British luxury brand saw a 21.5 percent decline in 2024, with just 10600 cars delivered.

Over the past 12 months, Lamborghini has delivered 100 more cars than its domestic competitor. It may not sound significant at first glance, but Bentley has always been far ahead of Lamborghini during the VW Group era. That's no longer the case.

In 2016, the last year before the Urus joined Lamborghini's lineup, the Italian manufacturer sold just 3,465 cars. Bentley saw sales nearly triple that year.

Of course, it could be argued that this is not a fair comparison, as the Bentayga SUV carried the lion's share of sales. However, even before the British SUV arrived, Bentley had significantly higher sales than Lamborghini, which is generally considered the more exotic of the two brands.

In 2014, the last year before Bentaygas, Bentley sold about 11 cars, four times more than Lamborghini.

As for the cause of the sales decline in 2024, the discontinuation of the legendary W12 engine certainly didn't help.

Also, the V8 engine is facing a shutdown, as it is only available in the Bentayga model. We should also not forget that the new Continental GT came out last year and a model generation change usually slows down sales.

Both companies are planning to expand their offerings with electric vehicles. However, VW Group's luxury brands have delayed the introduction of their EV models.

Lamborghini's Lanzador, a two-seater with four seats and higher ground clearance, will be introduced in 2029 instead of 2028.

Bentley's "Urban SUV," smaller than the fossil-fuel Bentayga, was due to hit the market this year, but its launch has been pushed back to 2026. /Telegraph/
