Acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti commented today on the issue of the 2026 draft budget, saying that the Law on Government enables this acting executive to propose the draft budget for 2026 to the Kosovo Assembly, although according to him, it does not mean that the work ends there.

Speaking at a press conference about the importance of this draft budget, Kurti said that the country cannot move forward without this law.

However, he said that the circumstances of yesterday's extraordinary session left many unknowns for the path forward regarding the budget.

"A country without a budget is a country that cannot move forward. We have the right to propose the budget for 2026 to the Kosovo Assembly based on the law on the Government, but at the same time we will need to do a lot of consultations with lawyers in order to see what the way forward is, since the fact that the Government approves a budget proposal for 2026 does not mean that the work is over, but only that it has begun. There are still no parliamentary committees in the Assembly and also what would be the budget that would have the majority of 61 deputies, because in two readings it will have to pass the Assembly in which, as we saw yesterday, the government or the cabinet that I proposed received 56 votes. Thus, there are many unknowns about the way forward and yesterday has added to them," he said.

The deadline for approving the 2026 budget in the Kosovo government is October 31.

Yesterday, in the extraordinary session of the Kosovo Assembly to elect the Government, Kurti 3, proposed by Vetëvendosje, did not receive enough votes to form the new government, as only 56 votes were in favor, 52 against and 4 abstentions.
