Kosovo one week away from local elections

A total of 38 mayors and members of 38 municipal assemblies will be elected by the votes of the citizens of Kosovo.
There is still one week left until the citizens of the Republic of Kosovo will have the opportunity to elect the mayor of the municipality where they live and the members of the municipal assemblies, Anadolu reports.
On October 12, the ballot boxes will be open for the citizens' verdict – the eighth consecutive elections for municipal assemblies and the sixth for mayors.
A total of 38 mayors and members of 38 municipal assemblies will be elected by the votes of Kosovo citizens.
The decision to hold local elections on October 12 was made in June of this year by the country's president, Vjosa Osmani, after consultations with political parties and in accordance with constitutional and legal deadlines.
These elections come at a time when central institutions have faced challenges following the parliamentary elections of February 9, 2025, as the parliament has not yet elected the president and the new government has not been formed.
Meanwhile, the Central Election Commission (CEC) is continuing technical preparations for the smooth conduct of the electoral process.
According to the Voter List data, 2.025.105 citizens will vote at polling stations within the territory of the Republic of Kosovo, while 43.993 voters have registered to vote by mail from abroad.
The electoral process will take place in 948 voting centers with a total of 2.625 polling stations.
Voters outside Kosovo have had the opportunity to vote by mail starting September 17, 2025.
The number of political entities certified for elections is 93 in total: including 32 political parties, 32 civic initiatives, 2 coalitions and 27 independent candidates.
A total of 5.626 candidates will be running, of which 206 for mayors and the rest for seats in municipal assemblies.
The conduct of elections in the north, where the Serb community is the majority, is rarely accompanied by competition or faces special administrative challenges.
After a four-year period in which the Serbian List boycotted local institutions in northern Kosovo, this party has returned to the electoral race on October 12, 2025.
During this period, four Serb-majority municipalities – North Mitrovica, Zvecan, Leposavic and Zubin Potok – were led by Albanian mayors who emerged from the snap elections, creating an unusual political situation. With the return of the Serb List in the elections, there is a real possibility that these municipalities will once again come under the leadership of Serb representatives.
The last local elections in Kosovo were held in October 2021.
