The UN Special Rapporteur on the Protection of Human Rights, Mary Lawlor, has expressed concern about the human rights situation in Serbia, following the violent actions of the authorities in Belgrade against student protests, but there has been not a single word regarding the situation of Albanians in the Presevo Valley.
Lawlor, in a post on the X platform, called on the authorities in Belgrade to stop the violence against Serbian citizens.
"Arbitrary arrests, escorts, defamation and any other form of harassment are unacceptable," she said.
Analyst Kaltrina Kamberi on the X network asked the UN special rapporteur on human rights if she shares the same concern about the violation of the rights of Albanians by the Belgrade regime.
“Or does this issue not concern you in the same way? Will you take action to protect the human rights of all communities in Serbia, or is the focus only on the Serbian community?”
Kamberi has said that until no measures are taken against President Aleksandar Vučić and his authoritarian pro-Russian government, the situation will not improve.
Albanians from the Presevo Valley are constantly being discriminated against and their rights violated by Serbia. Last year, they held several protests demanding an end to the passivization of Albanian addresses by Serbia, recognition of diplomas, jobs and institutions open to all.
The European Commission and the German Foreign Ministry last year expressed concern about the passivity of Albanian addresses in the Presevo Valley, emphasizing that this tendency of Serbia conflicts with the obligations this country has to respect minority rights.
According to the latest population census in Serbia, Albanians are the fourth largest minority in terms of numbers, with around 61 thousand registered Albanians.
