Joan Laporta resigns as Barcelona president

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has confirmed that he will resign from his position on Monday, February 9, 2026, to officially launch his candidacy for re-election in the presidential vote scheduled for Sunday, March 15, 2026.
In an institutional statement published through the club's official channels, Laporta explained that, in accordance with the club's statutes, he and several board members must resign to be candidates.
Another group of leaders, led by Vice President Rafael Yuste, will remain in office to manage day-to-day affairs and oversee the election process.
Laporta made the announcement while travelling with the first team for the Copa Del Rey quarter-final match against Albacete.
Laporta expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming campaign, describing himself as "excited and energetic" and hoping for a high turnout, a model electoral process, conducted with normality and fairness among all members of Barcelona.
He acknowledged the other announced or potential candidacies — including Victor Font, Marc Ciria, Xavi Vilajoana and Joan Camprubi Montal — and called on them to present their proposals respectfully.

Regarding transitional management, he emphasized that the remaining board members will oversee the elections to ensure that they turn into "a celebration" for the membership.
Speaking about the club's bid to host the 2029 Champions League final at the renovated 'Camp Nou', Laporta stressed that institutional work continues without interruption, adding that he hopes that the proposal will be declared the winner and that Barcelona can participate in the final if it is awarded the organization.Telegrafi/
