It is now mathematically impossible for Italy to take fifth place in the Champions League, as Lazio's elimination from the Europa League means England and Spain will get an extra place in the 2025/26 season.
Serie A was given the opportunity to send five teams to UEFA's top tournament in the 2024/25 season thanks to their position in the coefficient rankings for the previous year.
They had been on track to do it again, as Inter have progressed to the Champions League semi-finals against Barcelona, while Fiorentina will face Real Betis in the Conference League semi-finals.
However, after Lazio were eliminated on penalties by Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League quarter-finals after a 3-3 aggregate draw, it means it is now mathematically impossible for Italy to catch Spain in the UEFA rankings for this season.
Therefore, England and Spain will receive a fifth spot in the Champions League for next season, while Serie A will only receive four spots.
Italian football still has two clubs remaining in the semi-finals of three UEFA tournaments, but there are three Spanish teams and four English ones. /Telegraph/
