Selling out fast, more than 100,000 reservations in just two weeks – Slate electric pickup truck

Slate, an electric vehicle startup backed by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, announced Monday that it has received more than 100,000 reservations for its affordable electric pickup truck.

The reservation price is only $50, which means the company has already raised over $5 million through reservation payments, reports Telegraph.

“We’re really grateful for the response Americans have had to the launch of the Slate brand and our pickup truck. We’re excited about what’s ahead,” Jeremy Snyder, the company’s chief commercial officer, told TechCrunch.

This milestone comes just two weeks after the introduction of a model, expected to cost under $25,000 with federal subsidies.

The strong interest shows that there is a strong demand for simple, affordable work vehicles – a segment that is currently virtually nonexistent in the US market.

Of course, reservations don't automatically mean sales. For example, Cadillac claimed to have 18 months of production reserves for the Celestiq model, but later revealed that it had sold fewer than 25 units.

Similarly, Fisker claimed to have more than 60,000 reservations for the Ocean SUV and ended up selling only a few thousand vehicles before going bankrupt.

Even Tesla reportedly had more than a million reservations for the Cybertruck, but after about 50,000 units sold, a large number of trucks remained unsold in warehouses.

Unlike the examples above, the Slate pickup truck feels like a more realistic and practical product. The low price and simple design mean it has a much wider customer base.

Customers won't have to wait long, either. Slate reports that its Indiana factory will have the capacity to produce up to 150,000 vehicles per year, starting in 2027.

Production of the pickup truck is scheduled to begin next year, and until then you can visit the configurator on the website, where you can choose between three body versions and dozens of accessories and equipment. /Telegraph/
