Istanbul's chief prosecutor's office has opened an investigation after Israeli naval commandos arrested Turkish citizens aboard the Gaza aid flotilla.

The investigation concerns "Turkish nationals arrested following the attack carried out by elements of the Israeli navy in international waters on the Global Sumud fleet," a statement said.

The UN Convention on the Law of the Sea was mentioned and it was said that “grave looting, material damage and torture” would be investigated.

Turkish media reported that a total of 30 Turkish citizens were taken by Israeli forces, reports Aljazeera.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has reacted sharply to the recent actions of the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

"I condemn Israel's attack on the Global Sumud Fleet, which was set out to bring humanitarian aid to the Palestinians. This shows once again that the Netanyahu government cannot tolerate even peace. The fleet exposed the tragedy of Gaza and Israel's crimes to the world. We are closely following the situation, ensuring the safety of activists and citizens. Our priority: stopping the bloodshed in Gaza and the free distribution of aid," he said.

Otherwise, the fleet of 40 international ships is trying to deliver humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip. /Telegraph/
