The Israeli army announced today the launch of a "major operation" against Palestinian armed groups in the northern occupied West Bank.

"During Wednesday night, [Israeli] forces began operations as part of a major counter-terrorism operation in the northern region" of the West Bank, the Israeli army said in a statement.

Israeli forces "will not allow terrorism to take root there," the army added.

Israel has occupied the West Bank since 1967.

The Israeli army told AFP that it was not a continuation of the "counter-terrorism operation" launched in January 2025, which was mainly focused on Palestinian refugee camps in the region, but rather "a new operation." It did not provide further details.

Violence in the West Bank erupted after the start of the war in Gaza, triggered by the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas's bloody attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023.

Since October 7, more than a thousand Palestinians - including many fighters, but also many civilians - have been killed by the Israeli army or settlers, according to an AFP tally based on Palestinian Authority data.

Meanwhile, according to official Israeli data, at least 43 Israelis, including civilians and soldiers, have been killed in Palestinian attacks or during Israeli military raids.

Violence in the West Bank has continued with unabated intensity since October 10, when the ceasefire in Gaza came into effect. /Telegraph/
