Israel-Hamas ceasefire returns to the table in new negotiations

The Palestinian militant group Hamas says it supports the resumption of a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip through a proposal presented by mediators, which would release five more hostages in Israel in exchange for a 50-day ceasefire.

Khalil al-Hayya, Hamas's top leader outside Gaza, said the group had approved a draft agreement sent by Egyptian and Qatari mediators, the Telegraph reports.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said it had also received the plan and presented a "counterproposal to the mediators in full coordination with the United States."

On Saturday, Netanyahu's office said he had held consultations on the ceasefire proposal from the mediators.

He said the Israeli counteroffer had been agreed with the US, but gave no further details. The US has not commented publicly on the matter.
