Iranian authorities cut off internet access and phone lines in Tehran and other cities on Thursday, but despite the near-total communications blockade, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei continued to post unhindered on social media.

Khamenei called the protesters "a group of people bent on destruction" and criticized US President Donald Trump over Xu.

He posted 12 times on Friday alone.

How is this possible in a country that is almost completely cut off from the internet for its citizens?

The answer was explained by Doug Madory, director of internet analysis at network intelligence firm Kentik, which studies internet outages.

"Iran is technically connected to the internet, even if no one there can communicate," Madory said.

"They just turned it off, even though they are connected," he added.

According to him, the regime has complete control and can selectively grant access to chosen individuals.

"They could do this for any person or any specific internet connection," he noted. /Telegraph/
