Iran reportedly elects new supreme leader

Iran isbberwith a new supreme leader.
Iran's Assembly of Experts elected Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei as the new supreme leader of the Islamic Republic, reported Iran International.
According to the same source, the choice was made under pressure from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
Mojtaba Khamenei inherits the post of his late father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in an Israeli airstrike early Saturday.
He is the second eldest son of the former Iranian supreme leader, writes themirror.
As a young man, he participated in the Iran-Iraq War as part of the IRGC, and later led the paramilitary organization Basij, which was involved in suppressing protests after the 2009 elections.
While many have long believed that Mojtaba would be a leading candidate to replace Khamenei, experts had different opinions.
Khamenei himself reportedly did not include him in a list of potential successors he prepared last year. In Iran's Shiite religious structure, a succession from father to son is not viewed positively.
However, as Mojtaba looks set to take the helm at a tense time for Iran, here's everything you need to know about his family and wealth.
Mojtaba was placed under US sanctions in 2019. However, a Bloomberg report revealed that he had managed to build a global property empire and channel funds, reportedly worth billions of dollars, into Western markets. /Telegraph/
