India blocks Turkey's BRICS membership because of relations with Pakistan

BRICS, an intergovernmental organization made up of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, recently rejected Turkey's bid for membership.

It is understood that Turkey's application had received support from several BRICS countries and discussions were said to be close to completion.

However, India ultimately blocked Turkey's membership because of its close ties with Pakistan, a nation with which India has long-standing regional tensions.

As reported, in addition to Turkey's rejection, BRICS decided not to accept any new full members for 2024, they write foreign media, the Telegraph reports.

Meanwhile, the organization accepted 13 new countries as official partner countries, allowing them to participate in some BRICS initiatives without full membership status.

Otherwise, India's firm stance reflects its concerns about regional security in South Asia and what it describes as the roles of Turkey and Pakistan in promoting instability in areas such as Jammu and Kashmir.

This incident also underscores the complex regional dynamics influencing BRICS expansion decisions and highlights the challenges Turkey faces in balancing international relations in its pursuit of multilateral partnerships.

Some analysts argue that Turkey's application lacked strategic foresight, given the clear risks of rejection due to its relationship with Pakistan. /Telegraph/
