A driver who crashed his vehicle into a large synagogue in Michigan has died.

Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard said the suspect drove his vehicle through the doors of the Temple Israel synagogue in West Bloomfield before it burst into flames.

Security guards at the synagogue opened fire as he approached.

One of them who was hit by the vehicle was being treated in hospital and is expected to recover.

According to the FBI, the incident was being investigated as a "targeted act of violence against the Jewish community."

The US Department of Homeland Security identified the suspect as Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, a 41-year-old born in Lebanon who came to the US in 2011.

By contrast, Temple Israel - one of the largest Reform Jewish synagogues in the US - also has a daycare center from which dozens of children had to be evacuated during the incident.

US President Donald Trump has also reacted to the incident.

He stated that he wanted to "send love to the Michigan Jewish community and all the people in Detroit."

"It's a terrible thing," he said. /Telegraph/
