A federal grand jury has indicted a 33-year-old Ohio man for threatening to kill US Vice President JD Vance, the Justice Department announced in a press release.

Shannon Mathre of Toledo is accused of saying, "I'm going to find out where he's going to be and I'm going to use my M14 assault rifle and kill him."

This threat is reported to have been made on or about January 21, according to the indictment.

The indictment further alleges that Mathre distributed child sexual abuse materials, writes CNN.

"Federal law enforcement discovered that he also possessed child sexual abuse materials," said Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche.

Attorney General Pam Bondi also said in a statement: "Our attorneys are vigorously prosecuting this despicable threat against Vice President Vance."

Mathre faces a maximum sentence of 5 years and a $250,000 fine for threatening to kill Vance.

In addition, he faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison for the child sexual abuse materials charge and a $250,000 fine, if convicted.

He now remains in custody and will have a detention hearing on Wednesday. /Telegraph/
