"I grew up in Albania, a small country in Europe" - the amazing journey of the Albanian engineer Mira Murati who transformed the world with Artificial Intelligence

The Albanian engineer Mira Murati was recently appointed the temporary Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the company OpenAI, after the dismissal of Sam Altman from this position.

Murati became a headline in the world media after the launch of the ChatGPT platform, from the OpenAI company where he held the position of Chief Technology Officer until yesterday, Telegrafi reports.

As Chief Technology Officer at OpenAI she led work on platforms such as ChatGPT, DALL-E, OpenAI API and other projects.

She graduated only in 2012.

This is the impressive story of Mira Murat

Murat was born in Albania in 1988 and her origins are believed to be from the city of Vlora. When I was only 2 years old, the dictatorial regime of that time had fallen in Albania.

Because she had experienced regime change and history books constantly changing, she was drawn to the truth of mathematics and physics as a child.

"I grew up in Albania, it is a small country in Europe, this was during the transition from totalitarian communism to liberal capitalism. And when she was 2 years old, the dictatorial regime fell", she said in an interview.

An excellent student in Albania, Murati won a scholarship to an exclusive international high school in Canada for her last two years.

After that she was certified with an engineering degree at Dartmouth University an Ivy League college. Her latest project was building a hybrid racing car.

Reportedly, after graduating from Dartmouth University, Murat was briefly an engineer at an aerospace company shortly before joining renowned carmaker Tesla.

At Tesla, she was Senior Product Manager for Model X production for three years.

In that position, she worked extensively on the Autopilot system, which made her more interested in Artificial Intelligence technology.

After Tesla, Murat joined Leap Motion, the space computing company founded by Midjourney founder David Holz.

She worked closely with one of the smartest people in AI technology, overseeing both the vice president (VP) and engineering aspects of the organization.

This experience gave her deep experience, which led her to OpenAI.

Murat did not join this company initially as Chief Technology Officer, but was vice president of Applied Artificial Intelligence Partnerships.

In that role, she led the transformation of OpenAI from a non-profit to a for-profit company.

On the partnership side, Mira was responsible for the Microsoft partnership, (started in 2019).

As it is said, on the side of applied Artificial Intelligence, the Albanian woman was responsible for the launch of the OpenAI API.

This led OpenAI to transform from a non-profit organization to a more commercial-oriented entity by introducing a system where users could purchase usage credits to access OpenAI's API, indicating a move towards generating revenue through commercial activities.

This furthered the commercialization of OpenAI, turning the organization from a non-profit to one that sold usage credits on its API.

For her work, in December 2020, Murati was promoted to the position of senior vice president (SVP).

Not stopping there, she then led the launch of OpenAI's DALL-E model, a well-known platform for generating images from text; another massive success.

So, just 18 months after becoming SVP, the Albanian engineer rose to the position of Chief Technology Officer (CTO) in the company known for Artificial Intelligence.

This happened in May of last year, just before OpenAI made the biggest launch ever in technology.

As CTO, she oversaw the launch of OpenAI's most important product: ChatGPT.

ChatGPT, which some forget was only launched on November 29 last year, changed the world forever.

Since the launch of ChatGPT, Murat has also led the launches of GPT-4, Plugins and Code Interpreter.

Given its trajectory, it may continue to push forward the use of AI in the world. /Telegraph/
