Hybrid technology pioneer reaps the fruits of the last three decades of work

Few manufacturers can boast of having sold more than 30 million hybrid, electric and hydrogen vehicles in a period of less than 30 years. Toyota, the leader in vehicle electrification, continues to increase its sales year after year.

Since the introduction of the first Prius in 1997 – the first mass-produced hybrid vehicle – and by the end of 2024, Toyota has managed to sell over 30 million electrified vehicles worldwide.

Of this total, over six million units were sold in Europe. Between 1997 and 2024, the majority of electrified vehicles sold on the continent were plug-in hybrids (HEVs).

More specifically, 5.884.708 hybrid cars have been sold so far, followed by 165.830 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models.

In third place come fully electric cars, with 93.259 units sold so far, while hydrogen vehicles have been sold at 3.897 units. Recently, Toyota has also started offering mild-hybrid models in its range.

Last year was a record year for the Toyota Group, which also includes the Lexus brand. In the European market, the company managed to sell 1.217.132 new vehicles, setting a new sales record. /Telegraph/
