The US Hurricane Center announced that reconnaissance aircraft had detected that Tropical Storm Jota was strengthening.
They said this will be the 13th hurricane of the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season.
Meteorologists said Iota is "rapidly strengthening" and growing into a major hurricane as it approaches Central America, a region that was recently hit by Hurricane Eta.
Forecasters said Iota is moving with maximum sustained winds of 120 kilometers per hour.
The agency issued warnings that the hurricane will hit Colombia, as well as parts of Honduras and Nicaragua. /Telegraph/
