Heart surgeries are considered among the most delicate interventions in medicine, however, thanks to modern technology and the experience of cardiovascular surgeons, these procedures are performed with high precision and safety for the patient.

During the podcast "Health First", supported by United Hospital, cardiovascular surgeon Raif Çavolli explained in a simple way how a heart operation is performed and what happens to its function during the intervention.

According to him, in order to operate on the heart, it must be temporarily stopped.

"You have to stop the heart to work. The heart is a mechanical pump that pumps blood into the body. The function of the heart is taken over by another device known as an extracorporeal machine where it takes blood from the body, passes through several mechanical tubes, passes into a reservoir, is oxygenated and passes back into the body. This is known as extracorporeal circulation. The heart during that period is calm, in a kind of sleep. It sleeps during that period. Operations are performed without blood and without movement, and this is so that the surgeon is calm and the patient is well", explained Çavolli.
