Ruben Amorim is challenging a long football tradition – and his bold approach is paying off.
Traditionally, teams prefer to attack in front of their supporters in the second half, but Amorim has turned this around for Manchester United.
The Portuguese believes the fans' reaction in the first half could help address Manchester United's poor start to the season at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils have struggled at Old Trafford this season, losing seven league games at home and equalling a 132-year-old record for home defeats.
The data supports Amorimi's idea – since 2016/17, Man United have averaged 0.5 more points per game when they score in the first half.
Recent results suggest it is working, with the Red Devils scoring as many goals in the first half against Ipswich as they had in their previous 19 games combined.
Even against Arsenal, Bruno Fernandes' free kick just before half-time gave the home side the lead for the first time in more than three months.
While the tactic is not foolproof – Man United lost to Fulham in the FA Cup – it has given them a psychological advantage at key moments. /Telegraph/
