On the fifth anniversary of the Washington Agreement signed on September 4, 2020, former Prime Minister of Kosovo, Avdullah Hoti, reacted through a post on social media, describing this agreement as a missed opportunity for the country.

Hoti believes that the agreement was a historic moment that could strengthen the strategic partnership with the United States of America and place Kosovo at the center of regional economic developments through major infrastructure projects.

"If the projects included in this agreement were implemented, Kosovo would today have a central role as a road, rail and energy hub in the region," Hoti wrote, citing the connection to the ports of Durres and Thessaloniki as an example.

The former Prime Minister and currently LDK MP also mentioned Israel's recognition as an important political achievement of this agreement, which had deepened Kosovo's international subjectivity.

However, Hoti has criticized the subsequent government for what he called negligence and non-implementation of the agreement.

He also mentioned a long list of actions taken by his Government in the period September 2020 – March 2021 to implement the agreement, including: Discussions on infrastructure projects with the DFC, the functionalization of the border crossing in Merdar, preparation for mutual recognition of diplomas with Serbia, studies on Lake Ujman and gas pipeline projects, agreements on the 5G system, measures for air traffic and energy security, actions to declare terrorist organizations, and diplomatic relations with Israel.

Hoti added that, although the agreement was harshly criticized at the time of signing, today everyone is convinced of its strategic importance. /Telegraph/
