This attack occurred at a politically tense time, following a disputed vote recount following the November presidential election, when Nasry Asfura won by a narrow margin.

Congress President Luis Redondo immediately ordered an investigation and requested the review of security cameras and emergency recordings to identify the perpetrator.

Meanwhile, President-elect Asfura called for calm, stressing that "this should not happen, regardless of the motive."

Tomas Zambrano, head of the National Party parliamentary group, called the attack an unacceptable act of violence and accused the ruling party of creating a hostile climate towards the opposition.

He requested that the Armed Forces and the National Police guarantee the security of legislators and Congress, warning that Honduras is entering an uncertain and politically tense period. /Telegraph/
