Torrential rainfall over the past few days has caused flooding and numerous problems in several municipalities in Kosovo, endangering infrastructure and the safety of citizens.

In Drenas, incessant rains over the last 24 hours have flooded several areas of the city, while according to several complaints received by the Telegraph from citizens, they have remained trapped in their homes.

Floods in Drenas

Telegrafi contacted Nexhmendin Gruda from the Directorate for Public Services and Emergency in the Municipality of Drenas, who said that currently the situation is not alarming, but that the most affected areas are Arllat, Komorani and part of the city.

"Currently, the situation in our municipality is not critical, but in cooperation with firefighters, we are coming to the aid of citizens who have been affected by the rainfall. The most affected areas are Arllat, Komorani and part of the city, but we have the situation under control," said Gruda.

Meteorologists warn that rainfall may continue in the coming days, increasing the risk of further flooding.

The problematic situation continues in Malisheva, where the underground parking lot and the underpass for cars have been flooded again. This facility was out of order a few days after its inauguration, as a result of rainfall and water accumulation. Although the Municipality of Malisheva had previously stated that the problem was related to the blockage of the drainage system by irresponsible citizens, recent images published on social networks show that the situation has not been resolved. The parking lot remains impassable for vehicles, causing considerable difficulties for their drivers.

Meanwhile, the Municipality of Gjakova has announced that due to the rapid melting of snow in mountainous areas and continuous rainfall, the situation in some parts of the municipality appears unstable. The most endangered situation is near the rivers, which are facing large water flows. As a result, the “Bujar Roka” road and the Shkugëze bridge have been temporarily blocked, as crossing has been made difficult by the increase in the level of the Erenik river.

The situation is also worsening in some parts of Prishtina, where neighborhoods such as Prishtina e Re, Dardania, Lakërishtë and several other areas are facing flooding.

Major flooding has also been reported in the village of Fortesë in Rahovec, where almost the entire village has been flooded.

According to the Hydrometeorological Institute of Kosovo, rainfall from January 3 to 5, 2026 has caused a significant increase in water levels in the western part of the country, especially in the White Drini basin.

Flooding has also been reported in Gllareva, more precisely in the section where work is being done on the Klina-Peja road, where vehicles are having difficulty passing.

A worsening situation is also reported from Lipjan, where Telegraf readers have also sent videos showing how cars are having difficulty circulating freely.

Rivers originating in the Albanian Alps, including the Erenik, the Bistrica e Peja, the Bistrica e Deçani, and the Istog River, have seen significant increases in levels, increasing the risk of overflowing their banks in some areas.

The highest rainfall amounts were recorded in Junik with 231.5 mm, Gllogjan with 151.6 mm, Kuqishte with 130.4 mm and Radoniq with 124.7 mm. Meanwhile, the level of the Erenik River in Gjakova has reached 3.4 meters, one of the highest levels measured during this period.

Municipal authorities and responsible institutions call on citizens, especially those living near river flows, to show increased caution and follow official announcements, as the situation remains sensitive and requires constant attention. /Telegrafi/
