"He is number one in Europe and the world," La Liga president praises Xabi Alonso's move to Real Madrid

La Liga president Javier Tebas has spoken positively about the possible arrival of Xabi Alonso as the next Real Madrid coach, highlighting the impact this would have not only for the club, but also for Spanish football as a whole.

Speaking during a conference on economic control and sustainability held at the El Molinon stadium in Gijon, Tebas answered questions from the media and did not hold back his admiration for the former Spanish national team player.

"Real Madrid believes it is the best option for them and I am happy for Xabi Alonso," Tebas initially said.

"I'm happy that he's coming back to Spanish football and coming back to a big club - his club. I think it's a great move; clubs make their own decisions."

Tebas went on to highlight the wider importance for La Liga of bringing top talent back to Spain.

"I like it when the best players and coaches come to our league - the ones who are number one now in Europe and in the world."

"Xabi Alonso is one of them. Winning a league with Bayer Leverkusen while competing with Bayern Munich is no easy feat," concluded the La Liga leader.

Alonso, who led Bayer Leverkusen to a historic Bundesliga title, has been strongly linked with a return to the Santiago Bernabeu in what would be his first coaching job in La Liga. /Telegraph/
