Grenade attack in French city – police provide first details

Twelve people were injured when a grenade was thrown at a bar in the city of Grenoble in southeastern France, officials have announced.

The attacker entered the bar, which was packed with customers, and threw a grenade before leaving without saying a word, according to prosecutor Francois Touret-de-Courcy.

Investigators have not yet identified a motive, but believe it was not a terrorist attack, writes the Guardian, the Telegraph reports.

The attacker was reportedly carrying a Kalashnikov-type assault rifle, but did not use it.

The incident reportedly occurred in the Olympic Village neighborhood, built when the city hosted the 1968 Winter Olympics.

The injured include six people in critical condition.

"I condemn in the strongest possible terms this criminal act of extraordinary violence," said the local mayor, Eric Piolle, in X, thanking the emergency services for their work.

Police confirmed that the explosion was caused by a thrown grenade. /Telegraph
