Greek academic: November 28 of Albanians should be officially celebrated in Greece as well

Dhimitris Christopoulos, Greek academic and intellectual, has declared that November 28, Albania's Independence Day, should be officially celebrated in Greece as well.

The call comes as thousands of Albanians in Athens took to the streets of the city to celebrate this important national day, bringing a festive and colorful atmosphere to the Greek capital.

Christopoulos recalled the symbolic importance of the date November 28, 1912, when the Independence of Albania was proclaimed in Vlora, comparing it with March 25, the Independence Day of Greece, which also has a symbolic nature.

He emphasized that national histories are often filled with symbolism and events that inspire generations, regardless of the delays or challenges that may have followed in reality.

Celebration of November 28 in Athens

This year marked a special event for the Albanian diaspora in Greece, as for the first time the party was organized on such a large scale in Athens.

However, Christopoulos noted the delay in this development, recalling a time when Albanians in Greece faced deep discrimination and prejudice.

He emphasized that today, most of the foreigners who receive Greek citizenship are Albanians, considering the racist slogan of the past — "You will never be Greek" — a lie surpassed by reality.

Call for institutional organization

Christopoulos suggested that the Greek authorities, especially the local ones, should support this celebration in an organized way, providing public spaces for the Albanian community to celebrate freely.

This, according to him, would strengthen Greek-Albanian relations and honor the great contribution of Albanian immigrants to Greek society.

He emphasized that institutional organization would also help avoid potential incidents and send a message of inclusion and respect.

Christopoulos expressed his desire to one day enjoy an Albanian celebration in an Athens square, including music and traditions from both cultures.

In conclusion, the academic emphasized that supporting the holidays of foreign communities is not only a symbolic act, but an important step towards building a more open and united society.

"It's a win-win situation for both parties," he concluded.
