GLPS: The institutional crisis cost the country non-membership in the Council of Europe

On May 13 and 14, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe met in Luxembourg for their annual meeting.

The Group for Legal and Political Studies, in a reaction to the media, emphasizes that unfortunately, Kosovo's membership application, which has been on hold since last year, was not discussed at this meeting.

"This situation comes, among other things, as a result of the inability of parliamentary political forces to compromise on the formation of a stable legislature and government after the elections of February 9 of this year.

"The past weeks should have been filled with intensive and strategic lobbying by all political actors for a successful vote. Unfortunately, in fact they were filled with fruitless debates over possible names and procedures for the constitution of the Assembly," the reaction states.

GLPS further emphasizes that the fact that there is no functional assembly even after 15 attempts to elect a president is the worst possible reflection for our country.

According to them, such a situation is costing Kosovo its integration aspirations, both in terms of losing important opportunities such as membership in the Council of Europe, and also in benefiting from the EU Growth Plan, which GLPS publicly reacted to a few days ago.

"GLPS would like to remind you that by not processing the application now, the next vote is postponed to May of next year. Considering the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine, it is not far-fetched that by May of next year Russia will be reinstalled as a member of the Council of Europe, which would practically make our country's membership in this organization impossible."

"Therefore, GLPS takes this opportunity to once again call for political responsibility from all parliamentary political forces and the rapid establishment of sustainable, strong and stable institutions in order to preserve the long-term political, economic and financial interests of the country," the reaction states, among other things. /Telegraph/
