From November 15, 2025, the obligation for mandatory possession of specified winter equipment in vehicles comes into force.

If the rules for the use and maintenance of winter equipment in vehicles, which are provided for in the Law on Road Traffic Safety, are not respected, according to the same, any driver who acts contrary to the provisions will be issued a fine payment order in the amount of 45 euros in MKD equivalent.


According to legal provisions and the Regulation on mandatory winter equipment, vehicles with a maximum permissible mass not exceeding 3.500 kilograms must have winter tires - tires on all wheels with a minimum tread depth of 4 mm or, if the vehicle has summer tires with a minimum tread depth of 4 mm, snow chains that match the size of the drive wheels.

Motor vehicles with all-wheel drive (4x4) must have winter tires on all wheels with a minimum tread depth of 6 mm or summer tires with a minimum tread depth of 4 mm if the vehicle has snow chains at least for the rear axle, in the case where the vehicle has permanent all-wheel drive or snow chains at least for the drive wheels when the vehicle has a folding drive system.

Vehicles with a mass exceeding 3,500 kg must have winter tires on all wheels with a minimum tread depth of 6 mm or, if the vehicle has summer tires with a minimum tread depth of 4 mm, must have snow chains appropriate to the tire size.

Buses and trucks that cannot fit chains must have winter tires on the active wheels and a tool kit.
