Former Albanian-American mobster John Alite becomes city councilor in the US

He has gone from being a lawbreaker to a lawmaker.

John Alite, a former Gambino crime family "enforcer," has been sworn in as a councilman representing the New Jersey neighborhood of Englishtown.

"You know what? I can actually do something good. I've already had a bad past and I'm here to make up for it and I'd like to do something in a positive way," Alite, 62, was quoted as saying, they write. foreign media, The Telegraph reports.

His work in the 1980s and 1990s as a top "winner" for "Teflon Don" Gambino boss John Gotti and his son John "Junior" Gotti will serve him well in politics, he explained.

"I understand Machiavelli's stuff, betrayal," said Alite, whose grandparents were Albanian immigrants from Gjirokastra.

Alite said he spent 14 years in prison for convictions including six murders, at least 37 shootings and countless beatings while working as a Gambino boss.

But he didn't have to defeat any rivals to win his seat on the council.

He was appointed to fill a vacancy until the end of the year after being recruited by Mayor Daniel Francisco and other local leaders impressed by his civic work to help young people.

There were skeptics at first – including some members of the Council – but Alite eventually convinced them that he was someone they couldn't refuse.

"Yes, there were people who opposed it - but I don't run away from my past at all," he said. "I use it as a way to move forward, to influence children and get them off the streets, to turn the negative into a positive."

The former mobster will hold the seat for another two years until 2027 – unless someone comes forward by March 21 to challenge him in the election.

He even estimates that he is more qualified than any left-wing Democrat currently holding higher office. /Telegraph/
