New York City's new mayor, Zohran Mamdani, will be sworn in by placing his hand on the Quran, a first in the city's history. He is 34 years old and the city's first Muslim mayor.

Most predecessors have sworn an oath on the Bible, although the law does not require the use of any religious text to uphold the Constitution.

During his campaign, Mamdani has spoken openly about his faith and built support among Muslim and South Asian voters, reports nbc.

At the ceremony, he will place his hand on two Qurans belonging to his family during a ceremony at a subway station, and on a third at a ceremony to be held later at the City Council.

This third Quran is an 18th or 19th century copy and is part of the collection of the Schomburg Center at the New York Public Library.

The decision to use the Quran has also drawn criticism from some conservatives. After the inauguration, the Quran will be on public display at the New York Public Library. /Telegraph/
