Egypt says it will not be part of any proposal that displaces Palestinians

Egypt refuses and will not be part of any proposal that displaces Palestinians from Gaza.

His foreign ministry said so on Thursday, following President Donald Trump's plan for the US to take over the war-torn region and his call for Egypt to accept displaced Palestinians.

Egypt, which borders the small enclave, denounced expressions of support by Israeli cabinet members for the plan to create a "Middle Eastern riviera" in Gaza under US control.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz ordered the military on Thursday to prepare a plan to allow the voluntary departure of Gaza residents from the strip, Israeli media reported.

Referring to Katz's order, the ministry said: "Egypt stresses the catastrophic consequences of this irresponsible act that weakens the ceasefire negotiations and would encourage a return to fighting."

In January, Egypt, along with Qatar and the US, brokered a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, ending a 15-month war that rocked the Middle East.

Talks on the second phase of the agreement were supposed to begin this week. /Telegraph/
