Dozens of homes were forced to evacuate after a huge sinkhole appeared in the middle of a road in south Wales

Thirty homes in a residential area in south Wales have been evacuated after a large sinkhole appeared in the middle of the road.

People have been asked to stay away after the 15-metre hole appeared in Nant Morlais, Pant, Merthyr, on December 1, according to British media reports.

Council officers and police are on site working with other agencies.

A statement from Merthyr Council said: “No further help or support is needed at this time, but thank you to everyone who has offered it. Safety is our top priority."

They also issued a warning, saying: "To allow engineers to continue working safely, please stay away from the area."

Heavy rain fell in parts of Wales overnight, just days after Storm Bert wreaked havoc across parts of the country, reports say. /Telegraph/
