Do you know when you should replace your towels?

Most of us believe that towels can last forever, as long as they're not torn, but experts warn that this isn't exactly true - especially for hygiene and health reasons.
Scientists and experts say that towels do not have a label with an exact expiration date like food, but over time they lose their ability to absorb, become unpleasantly smelly, rough to the touch and an ideal environment for the reproduction of bacteria that are difficult to remove with regular washing.
How long should you actually use a towel? The general recommendation is to replace bath towels approximately every two to three years, although higher-quality materials, such as Egyptian or Turkish cotton, can last up to five years with proper care.
If your towel no longer absorbs water as well as it used to, fades, or leaves an unpleasant odor even after washing, these are clear signs that it's time to throw it away.
Smaller towels, such as hand towels that are used more and washed more often, usually need to be replaced after a year or two because they lose their functionality more quickly.
Experts emphasize that proper drying and ventilation of the bathroom is essential - towels that remain wet for a long time become a suitable environment for the growth of bacteria and fungi, which can also lead to skin irritation. Therefore, it is important not only how often you wash, but also where and how you let them dry.
Of course, all this doesn't mean that every stiff or faded towel goes straight into the trash - old pieces can be used as cleaning cloths or for wiping after housework, which is an ecological and practical solution before they are finally thrown away.
In short - towels may not have an exact expiration date, but they definitely have a "use by" date, and timely replacement means better hygiene, freshness, and a more enjoyable post-shower experience.
