Anti-aging creams can improve the appearance of your skin, but their effectiveness depends on the ingredients, correct use, and your skin's needs, so promises don't always match results.

Among the first signs of aging skin are fine lines, dullness, and loss of elasticity, which leads many people to use anti-aging creams. Today, the beauty market is flooded with products that promise youthful, radiant, and wrinkle-free skin. But how effective are these formulas, and can they really reverse the aging process?

According to experts, including Rashmi Sriram, dermatologist at Fortis Hospital, Rajaji Nagar, Bengaluru, the science behind these creams and their ingredients are essential and it is these factors that determine whether an anti-aging cream is truly effective.

What anti-aging creams can and can't do

Anti-aging creams are designed to improve the appearance of aging skin, but their effectiveness depends on the formula, concentration of active ingredients, and regular use. According to Dr. Sriram, they can improve skin texture, increase hydration, and reduce the appearance of fine lines, “but they cannot permanently erase wrinkles or stop the natural aging process.”

Aging is influenced by a combination of factors such as genetics, sun exposure, pollution, lifestyle habits, and the natural decline of collagen and elastin in the body over time.
– A good anti-aging cream supports the structure and function of the skin, but expecting dramatic results overnight is unrealistic, reports the Telegraph.

Ingredients in anti-aging creams that really work

Retinoids (retinol, retinaldehyde, tretinoin)
Retinoids are the gold standard, Dr. Sriram says. They stimulate collagen production, increase cell turnover, and help reduce fine lines and pigmentation. They can cause irritation at first, so beginners should start with lower concentrations.

Vitamin C:
Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that fights free radicals and brightens skin tone. It also supports collagen synthesis, making skin firmer and more radiant over time.

Hyaluronic acid
Hyaluronic acid helps the skin retain moisture and make it fuller.
– It provides an immediate hydrating effect, making fine lines less visible – explains Dr. Sriram.

peptides
Peptides stimulate the skin to produce more collagen. Over time, they contribute to firming and smoothing the skin.

AHA and BHA acids
Acids like glycolic and salicylic exfoliate dead skin cells, improve texture, and increase the absorption of other ingredients.

How long does it take for them to take effect?

– Anti-aging creams require patience. Most ingredients take at least eight to 12 weeks to show visible changes, says Dr. Sriram. Retinoids can sometimes take up to six months. Regular and precise use is key, as overuse can irritate the skin and counteract the effects.

Who should start using anti-aging creams?

Experts advise prevention.
– You don’t have to wait for wrinkles to appear. Milder anti-aging ingredients can be used as early as your mid-twenties to slow the early signs of aging, says Dr. Sriram. Stronger formulas, like retinoids, should be introduced with caution, especially if you have sensitive or acne-prone skin.

How to choose the right anti-aging cream

When selecting, pay attention to these points:

  • short and effective composition
  • clinical studies or recommendations from dermatologists
  • stable packaging (hermetically sealed, not transparent)
  • choice according to your skin type
  • avoid creams that promise miracles or instant results
