Republican Congressman Mike Lawler has said that United States support for Kosovo remains "strong and bipartisan" in the US Congress, in a letter sent to the acting Prime Minister, Albin Kurti.

The letter, which the acting government published on Facebook on Friday, states: "Recent legislative actions, including the adoption of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2026, underscore America's continued commitment to Kosovo's Euro-Atlantic future."

Such efforts, the letter further states, are necessary for promoting long-term stability, security, and the rule of law throughout the Western Balkans.

He was referring to a National Defense Authorization Act, signed into law by President Donald Trump last week, which also requires Kosovo and Serbia to implement the agreement to normalize relations by 2023.

This letter comes after Lawler met Kurti during his visit to Washington in September, for which he thanked him in the letter.

The Republican congressman's comments come at a time when relations between Kosovo and the US suffered a blow during 2025, mainly due to Kurti's decisions to extend sovereignty to the Serb-majority north without coordination with the international community.

These actions even led to the indefinite suspension of a planned strategic dialogue between the two countries.

Kurti has justified these actions as being in accordance with the Constitution and laws of Kosovo and has recently said that relations with the US "are very good" and that the main disagreements have always had to do with Serbia and its structures, and never with bilateral issues.

On December 11, Kurti also said that when it comes to defense and security, relations "have never been better."
