University professor and former diplomat Blerim Canaj said that heads of state should attend the funeral of Haxhi Thaçi, the father of former President Hashim Thaçi. He also said that he was prevented from doing so by the fact that no one from the Jashari family was at the funeral.
Canaj said that their presence would convey a message of unity to citizens.
Former diplomat Canaj said that Hashim Thaçi is a historical figure and that Prime Minister Kurti and other institutional leaders should attend the funeral.
"If we talk about Hashim Thaci, we are talking about a historical figure. And since Hashim Thaci is not here, Albin Kurti should have attended Haxhi Thaci's funeral. I don't know why he wasn't there, but I think he should have been," Canaj said in Tëvë1.
Canaj said that from what he heard, there were no members of the Jashari family at the funeral, which he said hindered him.
"Something that bothered me so much, I heard that no one from the Jashari family was there. They should have been there at least as fellow citizens. And it would have been a message of unity. I think they should have been. The Speaker of the Assembly and the President should have been there too. It would have been a very good message for the citizens if they were there," said Canaj.
Hashim Thaçi was not allowed to attend his father's funeral by the Special Court. This decision has been criticized in Kosovo as a violation of human rights.
President Osmani, the Speaker of the Parliament and the Prime Minister have expressed condolences on the death of Haxhi Thaçi.
