California residents filmed the moment a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck their country

A powerful earthquake off the coast of Northern California has triggered a tsunami warning for millions of Americans.

And the San Francisco Bay Area has been told to expect big waves, foreign media write, the Telegraph reports, and residents have been asked to go "further inland" before the waves hit.

It's a magnitude 7 earthquake that struck Thursday morning about 50 miles off the coast of California.

An aftershock was then felt moments later.

The National Weather Service canceled the tsunami warning for coastal areas of California and Oregon.

"There is currently no tsunami risk for this area," the agency said.

However, at least 5.3 million people in California were under a tsunami warning after the quake struck, the US Geological Survey said.

Most of them were the ones who experienced the force of the powerful earthquake which was followed by smaller aftershocks although fortunately, there were no immediate reports of major damage or injuries. /Telegraph/
