British couple say they saved £20 a year by living on an island along the River Thames

A young couple from the UK have admitted that they have managed to save £20 a year by no longer renting an apartment in London - thus deciding to live on an island that can only be reached by boat.

Sacha Pritchard, 25, and Matt King, 28, moved to the island in Hampton along the River Thames after spending seven years in a flat they shared with seven other people, the Telegraph reports.

After three months of living there, they said it was "the best decision they ever made," given that they couldn't afford to live in a rented apartment in the UK capital.

Their new house has a garden overlooking the river - while the boat serves as a means of getting to land, and they say the boat is also included in the rent.

But considering there is no bridge leading to the island, Sacha and Matt have to use the boat – whose engine has occasionally broken down and they are forced to remain stranded on the island.

Sacha uses the boat to get to work five days a week from 9am to 17pm. /Telegraph/
