Morgan McSweeney has resigned as British Prime Minister Keir Starmer's chief of staff, amid the fallout from Peter Mandelson's scandal over new revelations about Jeffrey Epstein.

"After careful reflection, I have decided to resign from the government," McSweeney said in his resignation statement.

As the BBC reports, McSweeney admitted that the decision to appoint Mandelson as the UK's ambassador to the US last year "was wrong".

"The decision to appoint Peter Mandelson was wrong. He has damaged our party, our country and faith in politics itself," he said.

On Thursday, Starmer said he was "regretful" for believing Mandelson's "lies" and appointing him ambassador to the US, while pressure on him increased after he admitted he was aware of Mandelson's links with Epstein, a convicted sex offender.

Mandelson was sacked in September, but new files on Epstein suggest he shared confidential information with the convicted sex offender when he served as business secretary in 2009.

Mandelson has also resigned from the House of Lords and the Labour Party. /AA
