Biserko on the attack in the north: The fact that the West quickly supported the government of Kosovo, very significant

Sonja Biserko, chair of the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Serbia, has analyzed the recent events in Kosovo, placing them in a wider geopolitical context.

She connects developments in the region with possible changes in American foreign policy after the victory of Donald Trump in the presidential elections.

According to Biserko, Trump's victory could bring new uncertainties to the Western Balkans and change the US's strategic approach to Europe, reports Today.

She notes that Trump's isolationist policy has encouraged Europe to focus on itself, while the weakened influence of NATO and less strategic relations between the US and the EU pave the way for hybrid Russian activities in the region.

Referring to the last terrorist act in the north of Kosovo, Biserko emphasizes that this incident has placed the Western Balkans in the main security attention for the West.

She adds that the quick response of the West in support of the Kosovo government shows that the European intelligence centers may have information about the organizers of the attack.

"The terrorist act in Kosovo should be seen in that European context. The fact that the West reacted quickly and supported the government of Kosovo is very indicative because the European intelligence centers probably have information about who is behind that act", declared Biserko.

Michael Roth, a member of the German parliament, has stated that these terrorist methods are similar to Russian practices and has warned that, if Serbia is behind them, this could lead to the end of EU negotiations with Serbia.

Biserko notes that the current situation puts Serbia in a sensitive position, especially given the internal turmoil and protests in the country.

She suggests that Vucic may use the incident to divert attention from domestic problems while simultaneously trying to capitalize on Trump's victory and possible changes in international politics.

Biserko concludes by saying that the Western Balkans remains an important strategic battleground in the context of global rivalries and that the stability of the region depends on a strong and coordinated response from the West.
