Belgian public broadcaster VRT is demanding transparency from the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) regarding the voting in the 69th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest held in Basel.

VRT spokeswoman Yasmine Van der Borght said they have no indication that the televoting vote count was not carried out properly, but that they are demanding full transparency from the EBU.

"The main question is whether the current system guarantees the preservation of the opinions of viewers and listeners," she said.

VRT issued a statement after Spanish public broadcaster RTVE asked the EBU to conduct an investigation into the televoting results.

RTVE finds it strange that Israel's representative, Yuval Raphael, received televoting votes from the audience from Spain, despite protests organized against Israel's participation in the Eurovision Song Contest.

VRT supports RTVE's request and once again sends the EBU an invitation for a debate with all nations, out of genuine commitment and concern for the survival of the competition.

"We at VRT emphasize that the Eurovision Song Contest, as currently organized, is becoming less and less of a unifying and apolitical event. It is increasingly at odds with its original standards and values, as well as with the standards and values of public broadcasting," they emphasized.

In the end, they stated that VRT cooperates well with the EBU on many levels, but that without serious agreements regarding their concerns regarding the Eurovision Song Contest, they will question their future participation in this contest.

As is known, Israel finished in second place this year with 357 votes. During the Eurovision semi-final, while the Israeli representative was performing, VRT broadcast a message condemning Israel's human rights violations.

"Furthermore, Israel is stifling media freedom, which is why we are temporarily suspending the broadcast," they wrote.

The EBU then gave them a warning, so they didn't show this again during the final. /Telegraph/
